The John McCall MacBain Scholarship is a scholarship for McGill graduates to undertake a degree at the master’s or doctoral level offered by Wadham College at the University of Oxford.
About the John McCall MacBain Scholarship at Wadham
This scholarship was established by friends of John McCall MacBain in his honour to support talented McGill graduates of strong character with leadership potential to improve the lives of others.
The award is valued at up to GBP 50,000 per year for the regular duration of the graduate course taken full-time. Note that the actual amount will be determined by the McCall MacBain Foundation each year and will be based on the cost of tuition and fees for the particular course of study and Wadham College’s fees, including fees for room and board in College accommodation.
Note that applicants must apply and be admitted to the University of Oxford in a graduate degree that is offered at Wadham College.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must have completed at least one degree at McGill by August 2020
- Applicant must apply and be admitted to a graduate course that is offered at Wadham College
- Applicant must be “ordinarily resident” in Canada (e.g. paying Quebec or Canadian domestic student tuition fees while a McGill student. Note that Canadians studying abroad are still considered ordinarily resident in Canada)
Selection and Renewal Criteria
- Students will be selected on the basis of their community leadership, character, and academic excellence and will have their award renewed on the basis of the same
*Note that application to and acceptance at the University of Oxford are independent from application to the John McCall MacBain Graduate Scholarship.

To access the application for the John McCall MacBain Scholarship, sign up below to be notified when it goes live.
January 2020: Apply to Oxford
Students must apply to a graduate course offered by Wadham College at Oxford by Oxford’s January 2020 deadline.
March 2024: Apply to us
Once you have received your acceptance from Oxford, submit your scholarship application to us in March of 2024. Applications are due by April 9, 2024.
The application to the John McCall MacBain Scholarship at Wadham will consist of a comprehensive application form, transcripts, and references, all of which must be completed online.
Applicants will be notified by the end of April if they are selected for an interview. In-person interviews and selection will take place over the course of a day in Montreal on Saturday, May 9, 2020.
About John McCall MacBain, O.C.
John McCall MacBain grew up in Niagara Falls and completed his undergraduate studies at McGill University, where he was president of the Student Society of McGill University. From there, he was selected as a Rhodes Scholar and completed an M.A. in Law from Wadham College at Oxford University. From 1987 to 2006, Mr. McCall MacBain was the founder, president and CEO of Trader Classified Media, the world’s leading classified advertising company. Following the sale of the company, he and his wife, Dr. Marcy McCall MacBain, established the McCall MacBain Foundation, which aims to improve the welfare of humanity through focused grants in education, health, and the environment.
